Holiday - Idul Fitri

2008 Idul Fitri (Id-Ul-Fitr in English) celebrated on October 2nd, 2008. Most of schools official time off is two weeks. 1 day before public holiday dated, Muslims in Jakarta will perform Takbiran (The Takbir) starts from 10pm 'til late at night.

Tips:
  1. Try to leave early after work and avoid to go out when Takbiran night occurs, you better stay at home or hotel and watch TV
  2. On the D-day, many restaurants (independent retails) are close for more than 1 days (longest 1 week)
  3. Malls/Plazas on D-day operating hours starts from 1 pm - 10 pm and will be super-crowded

Domestic Flights

Ready to go out from Jakarta to another exotic places in Indonesia? Hehe, I'll help you to get reference to purchase online tickets from reliable airline companies in Indonesia:

(click to log on)

Indonesia AirAsia :
Try to purchase ticket long before your departure date, it's cheaper, does not apply on high season though. They say cheaper (yeah rite) but eventually the ticket price plus plus plus, it's not that cheap anymore compare to another airlines. FYI, AirAsia does not serve meal during your flight, you have to buy food & beverage from stewardess push cart, so bringing food from outside is probihited. And please be aware that you do not have 15-20kg-free-baggage so you have to pay Rp.9.000/baggage and only allow 1 hand-carry bag.

Lion Air
I bought ticket from LionAir online once, online payment no longer accepted if the reservation/purchase happens less than 24-hour before departure time.

Mandala Airline
Never used one..

Garuda Indonesia

Official Indonesian Airways, the fare a little bit expensive than other airline, but offers better service and safety hmmm...

Enjoy your flight

Senayan City

Senayan City (also known as Sen-C)is strategically situated on the west corner of the junction between Jl. Asia Afrika and the ‘newly proposed road leading from Jl. Jend. Sudirman to Jl. Arteri Pondok Indah', as part of the golden triangle area of Jakarta. And has been designated to be along Jl. Asia Afrika and faces both the direction of Plaza Senayan and the eastern part of Senayan City , also free access from 3 in1 traffic.

The site of development is approximately 48.000 square meters. The Senayan project aims to place its focus in portraying to be one of the most exclusive destination in Jakarta
.

I come to Senayan City almost once a week just to hang-out with bunch of friends have cup of coffee or watch movie in cinema XXI on the 5th fl. The location is really strategic and good parking basement, but Senayan City is kinda too big for me, every time I go there I just hang around in GF Floor, the most crowded level in Senayan City beside food court on 5th Floor. On GF, there are quite coffee shops, let say my favorite one is Secret Recipe (try moist chocolate, yummy) and Exelso, Coffee Bean, Krispy Kreme, J.Co (better taste than Krispy Kreme, well, acceptable amount of sugar), Burger King,Hot Shots, Kiyadon, etc.

1st-4th floor mostly liase by international branded retails, Zara, Topshop/Topman, Miss Selfridge, Levi's, (M)phosis, Samuel&Kevin, Baleno, Surf clothing brands, blah blah blah and Debenhams department store.

5th Fl, food court yay, there are more than 20 stalls, KFC, Mie Leker (good one, try Mie Kangkung), Fiesta Steak, and..hmm..too much to mentioned or I totally have short-term memory loss and a smell-make-you-sick smoking room also located in food court area. Anyway, Cinema XXI is on this floor too, while waiting for midnight show, you can hang around in Avenue/Soho just beside main entrance of Cinema XXI, opens till 00.00.

Senayan City opens daily from 10am-10pm but there some coffee shops close on 1am such as Starbucks, A Mild Cafe and there this XKTV on GF Fl., although I might say from the outside, really good looking karaoke venue, inside nah huh, that XKTV has poor list of songs, difficult software, and a bit pricey..Ok then, that's my reviews. See ya in Senayan City.

Restaurant Review

Jakarta has lot of great food whether local or international cuisine, almost all of type of cuisines you may find in here. One of subdistrict that has thousand options of food is Kelapa Gading. You name it Indonesian (Padang, Makassar, Manado, Bali), Western, Japanese, Chinese, Seafood. It's all there. Located in North East Jakarta, Kelapa Gading always has been the source of many great food. If you crave for chinese food, you can find the authentic ones (not halal or contain pork) in North Jakarta area (Kelapa Gading, Sunter, Pluit)

Kelapa Gading
Ones of my favorites are:

Coto Makassar - Sop Konro
The famous one, located in Boulevard Raya, the rib is really really good with indonesian spices. Serves it hot with steamed white rice and a bowl of tasty soup. Slurp..You can choose steamed rib or barbeque one. Both are great.

Apollo - Hainan Chicken Rice
The best hainanese chicken rice I think, I am not calling it the big fancy restaurant but they serve really magnificent chicken rice using original recipe and it comes with a plate of steamed chicken, sweet pork, salty pork and an egg , trust me it's really worth to try.

212 - Seafood
Seafood lover, welcome to the seafood paradise hehe..I don't know the address but I can tell you a direction to go there if you'd like to. One of the best menu is Shrimp in salty egg, yummy, well you know seafood, of course there will be fish, shrimp, shellfish, crab. I suggest you order Crab with Padang Sauce..saucy and spicy. Nowhere to be found except in Indonesia.

I have to stop now, it's 3 in the morning and funny noise is starting coming from my stomach..I'll add another reviews in Kelapa Gading area real soon.

DRAGONFLY
Graha BIP, Jl Jend Gatot Subroto Kav 23

Charles Webster is a true innovator in the electronic music scene with over than 10,000 albums sold.
Don't miss his special performance in his latest album release tour of "DEFECTED presents CHARLES WEBSTER"!

Charles Webster profile
People love Charles. DJs love him for making their jobs easier…producers love him for the inspiration he provides…his loyal fanbase love him because they can trust him to deliver time & again. Twenty odd years in the game and Charles has the RESPECT of several generations of music lovers.

For the past 20 years, Charles Webster has been a consistent and prolific force in dance and electronic music. Best known for his releases under various monikers (including Furry Phreaks, Presence, Love From San Francisco, and his own name), masterful collaborations with Terra Deva, Tracey Thorn and Robert Owens, vital remixes for artists like Herbert, Slope, Fish Go Deep, Justin Martin, Groove Armada.

Charles has become synonymous with sumptuous deep house grooves, intoxicating soulful vocals and heady downtempo soundscapes that are a testament to his skillful and continually evolving palette.

Keynote remixes for the likes of Dr Rockit (Charles’s remix of Café de Flore by this Matthew Herbert pseudonym must be one of the most licensed mixes ever) and Groove Armada (‘At The River’) saw Charles conquer the ever-growing chill out market much as he had with the deep house one, and helped pave the way for his first album under his own name, ‘Born On The 24th July’, released in 2002 to universal acclaim and was selected as the #2 best essential dance records since 2000 by iDJ Magazine (June 2008).

Charles Webster. Respect, as they say, is due.

Museums

Museum lovers, you really have to check historical museums in Jakarta, although I might say that some museums are not well-managed by the government and some are creepy enough and made me get goosebumps when I entered..

Fatahillah Square
This open-air museum of Old Batavia, now called Jakarta, Taman Fatahillah (Fatahillah Square) has three main establishments standing on the south, east and west of the cobblestone square proper. The first is the Jakarta Museum which exhibits the colonial history of the city by also includes relics from the pre-colonial past. The edifice on the east, formerly the Supreme Court, houses the Fine Arts Gallery and the Ceramics Museum containing, among others, the excellent Chinese and Southeast Asian ceramics collection donated by the late former Vice President Adam Malik. On the western side of the square is the Wayang Museum, filled with all sorts of puppets used in the indigenous puppet theatre. The largest part of the collection consists of wayang kulit flat leather puppets of various types from various regions. Demonstrations of the shadow play, lasting two hours, are given every Sunday morning. Fatahillah Square in colonial era was used as a prison for those who against the colony.

TIPS : Fatahillah Square, now, located in Kota, you can access this museum easily by TransJakarta (see TransJakarta Corridor Map) and there's a Batavia Cafe just in front of Fatahillah Square, good choice for your afternoon tea or dinner. Do not go there on weekdays, you'll lose your excitement because of the exhaustion from long and awful traffic in Kota.

National Monument (ID: Monumen Nasional)
The 137-metre tall monument with the gold flame on top facing the Presidential Palace in Jakarta symbolizes the nation's independence. The basement of the monument houses a Museum of History with dioramas depicting the history of Indonesia from prehistoric times up to the present. A good portion of it is devoted to the national war for independence waged from 1945 to December 1949. Not part of the museum but located similarly at the foot of the National Monument is the Hall of Silence, Indonesia's first President, Soekarno, can be heard. Located at Jalan Silang Monas Jakarta.
TIPS : Nowadays, Monas often used as a center of public demonstration, so please check local radio (SONORA or ELSHINTA) before your visit.

Armed Forces Museum | http://g.co/maps/j8zzk

Located in the southern part of Jakarta, is the Satria Mandala Museum, or Armed Forces Museum. This museum has an interesting collection of arms, including Japanese fighter planes of World War II vintage, Russian and American guns and armoured cars. Dioramas give the visitor an insight regarding the role of the Indonesian Armed Services in this country. Located at Jalan Jend. Gatot Subroto, Jakarta.
TIPS : skip your lunch or maybe just bring your lunch, the location near business district (Kuningan), so you you will save your time on weekends to go somehere else. Please be aware of Jakarta traffic rules and regulations, Three-In-One, in Gatot Subroto.

The Textile Museum | http://g.co/maps/yddqj

The Textile Museum on Jalan Sasuit Tubun in Jakarta, a many times renovated 19th century mansion, houses a collection of about 600 different kinds of traditional Indonesian textiles, from batik to ikat and Dayak bark cloths. Weaving was and often still is closely connected with religious practice In many regions such textiles are still user to pay fines, avert illness or for other social and religious purposes. Some of the oldest Indonesian ornamental designs arc found in their original textiles.
TIPS : We just realize that we really proud of Batik (finally), Indonesian local designers make some improvement for Batik to be more accustomed and wearable on daily basis activities. Modern Batik can be easily purchased with reasonable price (bargain required) in any ITCs (International Trade Center) in Jakarta.

Central Museum | http://g.co/maps/tvtn3
Jakarta's Central Museum is reputedly one of the finest in Southeast Asia. Founded in 1788, it still has the world's most complete collection of Indonesian artifacts. Its Hindu-Javanese collection rivals that of the Leiden Museum in Holland, reputedly the finest in the world. It has one the richest collections of Han, Tang and Ming porcelain and an array of Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese export ceramics Its numismatic collection includes rare specimens of cloth-money used in the past in various areas of Indonesia. Adjacent to the museum is the National Library with over 700,000 old and recent volumes of books, manuscripts and periodicals covering virtually every subject on Indonesian. Located at JI. Merdeka Barat 12. This museum is popularly known as Gedung Gajah or "Elephant Building" because of the stone elephant offered by King Chulalongkorn of Thailand in 1871, placed on the front lawn of the building.

TIPS : Three-In-One rule is applied in the area, use TransJakarta would be a good choice.

Located 768 m (2,520 ft) above sea level, Bandung has relatively year-around cooler temperature than most other Indonesian city. The city lies on a river basin and surrounded by volcanic mountains. This topology provides the city with a good natural defense system, which was the primary reason of Dutch East Indies government's plan to move the colony capital from Batavia to Bandung. Most of Bandung population are of Sundanese descent. Javanese is largest minority, from nearby provinces and eastern part of Java. Notable minorities include Chinese Indonesians, Indian Indonesians, and Korean Indonesians. International Airport

Soekarno Hatta International Airport at Cengkareng, Tangerang - Banten

The Soekarno Hatta airport has two terminals, further split up into subterminals, which are really just halls in the same building.

Terminal 1 :(A-B-C) is used by domestic airlines except Garuda,

Terminal 2 : International airlines (D-E) and Garuda domestic flights only (F).

Terminal 3 : Domestic (Air Asia)

To get to the city, the easiest and safest option is to take only "BLUE BIRD GROUP" taxi, starting fare at Rp. 6.000 (read more about Jakarta cab
or contact your hotel to pick you up in the airport.

If you have a flight to catch allow more time to reach the airport because of the traffic (it took nearly 45 minutes to one and half hour just to pass the freeway to Cengkareng) and sometimes the road to and from Cengkareng can be flooded and Indonesia rules and regulation are very rarely enforced in all aspect of life, so if you have question you may want to ask your friends for the Do's and Don'ts in Indonesia airport.

Prepare to put your stuff and belonging at the right bag, make sure liquid product (perfume, lotion, etc) more than 50ml has to be put in your baggage or the airport staff might just confiscate your belongings. 50ml means

Reminder:
When you fly back from Indonesia, prepare Rp. 150.000,-/person for an international airport tax and Rp. 75,000,- for domestic airport tax, to be paid at the immigration counter in Airport. It has to be in Indonesian currency and cash only.

La Piazza - Kelapa Gading

Kelapa Gading is located in North East Jakarta, surrounded by subdistricts Cempaka Putih, Sunter and Pulo Mas. It stretches west to east from By Pass road to Cakung and north to south from Koja to Perintis Kemerdekaan road. Kelapa Gading has a total area of 1.633,7 hectare, or 2,14% of the total Jakarta city.

In Jakarta, Kelapa Gading is famous among the food lovers. They can find Indonesian food (Minang food, Javanese food, Sundanese food, Manadonese food, Makassarese food, etc), Chinese food, Japanese food, Thai food and Western food. The central point in Kelapa Gading is the area for food, known as Gading Food City and more hundreds restaurants along boulevard.

Try my favorite restaurant :
Sop Konro (Coto Makassar) - ribs serves with authentic Makassar soup in boulevard
Apollo - Hainan chicken rice in boulevard
Baji Pamai - Ujung Pandang chicken noodles in boulevard
212 Seafood
* I will update my blog with restaurant listings in Jakarta.

Nowadays, Kelapa Gading is famous as a prestigious shopping centre area. Kelapa Gading is one of the subdisctrict in Jakarta, with five shopping malls in 20 kilometer radius. In 2004, Kelapa Gading has approximately 365,000 m2 of shopping centres. My favorite place to kill-time in Kelapa Gading is La Piazza which is also the extension from Kelapa Gading Mall.

La Piazza is a lifestyle concept and open place plaza for live music or watching soccer. One of many best places in Jakarta to hang out with a lot of options for coffee shops such as Starbuck's, Sega Fredo, The Barrel, Bakoel Coffee, DQ, and on the ground floor several restaurants : Loy Kee, Pizza Hut, Chatterbox, Healthy Choice and food court serves snacks on the first floor. The free hot-spot facility also offered by La Piazza by purchasing any (amount) of F&B within La Piazza tenants, exchange the receipt with username and password provided on the information/reception desk. The F&B prices are affordable and cheaper in La Terrace (food court)

The crowd come from Kelapa Gading, Sunter and Pulo Mas area and people start coming mostly in the evening and a bit crowded on weekends especially when there's an event is being held in the main atrium. Therefore I should warn you, when third-party is conducting an event that is targeted to teenage or inviting popular celebrities or bands, you might want to avoid La Piazza, sometimes the event makes it less comfortable because of the C and D class crowd are freely to coming around and the noisy sound from the stage in the main atrium, if you don't mind, think that as a free entertainment.

I provide you with Kelapa Gading Map, hope you will visit La Piazza after has business trips in Central Jakarta.

All About Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia, a country composed of more than 13,000 islands with a population of over 180 million. Comprising more than 300 ethnic groups speaking 200 different languages, the Indonesia population exhibits marked diversity in its linguistic, culture, and religious traditions. As the Capital City, Jakarta is a melting pot of representatives from each of these ethnic groups. Jakarta is a special territory enjoying the status of a province, consisting of Greater Jakarta, covering of 637.44 square km area. Located on the northern coast of West Java, it is the center of government, commerce and industry and has an extensive communications network with the rest of the country and the outside world. Strategically positioned in the archipelago, the city is also the principal gateway to the rest of Indonesia. From the Capital City, sophisticated land, air, and sea transport is available to the rest of the country and beyond.

Geographically
The Province is geographically located on 6012' South Latitude and 106048'- East Longitude. The government administration is set into 5 regions South Jakarta, Central Jakarta, East Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Jakarta and 1 regency/ administrative city, namely Thousand Island regency. The largest city is East Jakarta (187.73 sq km) and the smallest is Thousand Island regency (11.81 sq km). The average rainfall is 1,916.8- 924.50 mm/year. The temperature is between of 22 C - 33 C.

People
Indonesians are known as friendliest people in the world towards foreigners and most tolerant towards their manners. But there are few things, which are not done among Indonesia. They consider the head as something sacred that must be respected. Patting on the head is not done among adults. Calling someone by crooking the index finger is considered impolite and giving or receiving things with the left hand is no - where acceptable. The handshake accompanied with a smile is common among men and women greeting or welcoming somebody.

Not less 9 million people live in Jakarta representing nearly all the ethnic groups in the archipelago. The major groups are Sundanese, Javanese, Chinese, and the native community is Orang Betawi (people of Betawi). The other large groups are the Minangkabau people, the Bataks, the Manadonase, and the other people from Sulawesi and the Ambonase. Orang Betawi emerged in the 19th century from a melting pot of races, ethnic groups and cultures. They have their own culture distinct from other ethnics' cultures. In 1923 they founded an organization called Kaum Betawi, which was in fact a statement about the existence of the Betawi ethnic group. The majority professes is Islam. But it does not mean that Indonesia is an Islamic state. It is a Pancasila state. And one of the principles of Pancasila, the state ideology, is "belief in the one Supreme God". This means that the various belief systems must be respected and respect each other. This explains the ubiquitous Moslem prayer houses in the city beside many churches and a few temples.

In Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park), the prince Diponegoro Mosque is juxtaposition with the saint Catherine Church, the Hallelujah Church, the Pura Penataran Agung Kertabumi Temple, the Aria Dwipa Arama Monastery and the Indonesian Mystic Convention Hall, symbolizing the motto: Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity In Diversity) in matters of religions and belief - systems.

Betawi
Indonesia's cultural diversity is celebrated in the national motto, Bhineka Tunggal Ika, meaning "Unity in Diversity." One manifestation of this tenet of Indonesian national identity is the government's efforts to give equal precedence to the development of traditional art forms from each ethnic group. In Jakarta, Orang Betawi, the natives of the city, are considered to be the hosts of these cultures, having emerged from the melting pot of races, ethnic groups and cultures of Indonesia in the 19th century. Today they constitute one of the city's main ethnic groups along side the Javanese (from Central and Eastern Java), Sundanese (from West Java) and Chinese.

Culture
To see for themselves what and now those Betawi art forms are, we can go to any travel agent and ask for tour to a " Betawi Cultural Institution "to catch a glimpse of the real thing". Or we can visit the Jakarta pavilion at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Miniature Park) which has long been showing Betawi ceremonies such as the Betawi wedding ceremony, the circumcision procession, the baby head - shaving ceremony etc. As mentioned before, the Betawi group emerged in the 19th century from the melting pot of races, ethnic groups and cultures. Today the Betawi culture has a distinct personality of its own, but one can discern the various influences of other cultures by looking or listening to its art form.

The Tanjidor orchestra is certainly inherited from Dutch land - owners and the Gambang Kromong and Cokek dance originated in the residence of wealthy Chinese traders and merchants. The Betawi Cokek dance shows Balinese influence in the movement of the dancers and the style of playing the gamelan. This style of playing the gamelan can also be observed in the gamelan orchestra accompanying the Wayang Kulit Betawi show. The Portuguese speaking community has also left its inheritance, the Kroncong Tugu with its popular songs Nina Bobo, Kaparinyo and Kroncong moritsko is said to be the origin of the popular Kroncong orchestra of to day.

The Javanese presence since the 17th century has left its mark too on the Betawi music, dance and theatre; Wayang Kulit Betawi and Lenong are examples of this influence. A major influence on the Betawi culture is Islam, the religion of the majority of the people. The Rebana orchestra, the Gambus orchestra, the Zapin or Japin dance are Islam inspired art forms. The Betawi traditional art is developed and accepted well. Not only Betawi people, but also other ethnic groups are fond of this art. For example, the traditional drama-Lenong and Topeng Blantik (Blantik mask), the traditional dance - Tari Topeng (Mask Dance), Ondel-ondel, Ronggeng Topeng, etc, the traditional art of music - Sambrah, Rebana, Gambang Kromong, Tanjidor, Puppet - Betawi puppet using the Malay-Betawi dialect

Basically the marriage system used by Betawi people is the Islamic law. To whom they are allowed or have not allowed to get married with. The young people are also free to choose their partners. In spite of this, the parents` role either from the man's or woman's side are very important to approve the marriage, for the parents are involved in holding the marriage party. Before getting marriage the man and the woman are introduced to each other and when they both have agreement, the man's parents will propose the girl. After the two parties reach an agreement, they decide the time to hold the dowry delivery ceremony which is usually represented by another party, such as the relatives of the man's and the woman's sides. The marriage ceremony is held on the agreed day. After the marriage contract ceremony both the man and the woman go back to each their parents (their home). A few days later a ceremony of parents-in-law relationship is held and the bridegroom goes in procession to the bride's house. Before entering the bride's house, the bridegroom's side holds the question-answer ceremony by using the traditional poetry rhythm and it is accompanied by tambourine/rabana music with the welcome / marhaban songs. Then, the bridegroom is allowed to enter the house to meet the bride. They sit side by side for a moment. After that the bridegroom joins his parents and companions who escort him to the bride` house. When the ceremony is finished the bride may come with his husband to his house.

Language
The official language is Bahasa Indonesia and English is the most spoken and understood foreign language. In convention hotels they have translators for English, France, Dutch, German, Japanese, Mandarin, and even Spanish. The native Betawi people speak Betawi Malay, which is different from standard Malay. There are variations in the language according to region, the Betawi Malay of the centre and that of the periphery. There are also socio - cultural variations. The older people born and bred in Jakarta speak the traditional Betawi Malay, while the younger people and migrants speak the modern version of the language. In the language, various influences from other cultures are apparent, Balinese, Sundanese, and Javanese influences are there and words derived from Arabic, Dutch, Chinese and Portuguese are easily recognizable. Betawi Malay is spoken not only in Jakarta, but also in parts of Bekasi, Tangerang and Bogor, which belong to the province of West Java.
